Is this my new normal?

Hello, friends!

Third week of Shadow School DONE! Woot Woot! For those of you participating, how’s it going?

I spent a lot of this week observing myself. Karmen is in a full-blown sleep regression. After a day without napping and having to work very hard to put her down for bed, I had a quiet freak out — Is this going to be the new normal for bedtime?!?! Am I going to be having to work this hard EVERY time!?!?

 

I sat on the edge of my bed and stared into space digesting the new normal. I took a deep breath, relaxed my shoulders — anyone else noticing their shoulders up by their ears most days?!?

 

And remembered that NOTHING is NORMAL. Everything changes. This is a moment in time.

 

Inhale.

 

Exhale.

 

Yes, I can…do this…I can do anything that is needed.

 

I need time and space to self-reflect. To get off the ride of life and look around, assess my surroundings and how I interact with them. That used to happen on my meditation cushion, but I haven’t been called to sit lately. Instead, I’m sitting on the edge of my bed. I’m calling it my non-formal sit, and it’s working…most days.

 

All this to say, where and when you self-reflect is not as important as taking the time to do so. Whether you’re sitting on a bus, meditation cushion, cooking dinner, or walking. Stopping to look around and assess—is this working for me? Am I showing up the way I want to? Am I taking time to feed myself, whether that is with food or thought?
