Persephone & The Cycles of Life: Honoring Darkness & Light
The myth of Persephone is a story of transformation, reclamation, and balance between light and dark.
It speaks to the cycles of life—descent into the underworld, the loss of innocence, and the joyous return to light. In many ways, Persephone’s journey mirrors our own cycles of growth, change, and awakening.
In the Practice with Clara Virtual Yoga Studio, we honor mythology as a way to deepen our connection to our own unfolding. Persephone represents both the maiden and the queen, the darkness and the light, the descent and the return.
Her myth teaches us that we must embrace all aspects of ourselves—the quiet rest of winter and the expansive flourishing of spring.
In this session with Cindy Stockdale, you will explore:
✔ The Persephone myth as a metaphor for transformation and self-discovery.
✔ The importance of honoring both our light and our shadow.
✔ The connection between nature, renewal, and our personal emergence.
✔ Energy work to embody Persephone’s journey of return and expansion.
Like Persephone, we rise. We move from darkness into light, from dormancy into creation, and from hidden potential into full expression. What is ready to emerge within you?

We learn how to identify and discern our own feelings, beliefs, sensations, and then have the courage to live them outloud in the world. I am here for the wild one, the edge walker, the curse breaker, the life claimer. I am here for those who are ready to transform their lives.
WHERE TO FIND CINDY:
Persephone’s Myth – A Journey of Descent and Return
1. Arriving in the Present Moment
Find a comfortable seat or lie down, feeling supported.
Close your eyes.
Breathe deeply.
Release expectations, judgment, and resistance.
Invite in comfort, peace, and presence.
Spring carries Venus energy—luxury, beauty, and nourishment. Like Taurus season, it calls us to flourish, to receive, to open gently to life’s unfolding.
What do you need to feel fully nourished?
What will help you rise into your full illumination?
2. The Story of Persephone – Descent & Rebirth
Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was taken to the underworld by Hades.
Her mother’s grief caused the world to fall into darkness.
She was eventually allowed to return, but only for six months of the year—spending the other six in the underworld.
Her return to the surface marks the arrival of spring, but it is her mother’s joy that brings the world back to life.
This myth speaks to cycles of transformation:
- Descent into the underworld → A time of inner work and reflection.
- Time in the shadows → Learning to embrace our deeper layers.
- The joyous return → Moving from darkness into full radiance.
Persephone is both the maiden and the queen—she is innocence and wisdom, softness and strength, surrender and sovereignty.
What parts of yourself are emerging into light?
What wisdom have you gained from your own seasons of descent?
3. The Loss of Connection – Honoring the Earth & Our Cycles
The myth of Persephone is also a reminder of our connection to the land.
- Demeter’s grief represents the barren earth—a reflection of how we treat nature.
- The return of spring calls us to rekindle our relationship with the natural world.
How can we honor the cycles of life more deeply?
🌿 Grow something – A plant, a garden, a flower.
🌿 Spend time in nature – Not consuming, just being.
🌿 Celebrate beauty – Through art, movement, or creativity.
The energy of Persephone’s return is also our return—to the earth, to community, to ourselves.
4. The Descent – Embracing the Shadow
Persephone’s time in the underworld is not just about loss, but about transformation.
In mythology, many goddesses descend into the dark:
- Inanna’s descent to the underworld → A journey of stripping away illusions.
- Persephone’s time in the underworld → A journey of self-reclamation.
We all go through periods of descent—times of uncertainty, loss, or deep inner work.
Rather than fearing the dark, can we see it as part of the journey?
What has your time in the “underworld” taught you?
We cannot rise fully into our power without first understanding our depths.
5. The Return – Stepping into Light & Expansion
When Persephone returns, the earth blooms.
But she is no longer just a maiden—she is also queen of the underworld.
- She has gained wisdom.
- She has embraced her power.
- She holds both darkness and light.
This is an invitation to step forward as your whole self.
What wisdom have you gained from your own journey?
How can you honor your own rebirth?
Spring is not about forcing growth—it is about allowing yourself to bloom in your own time.
6. Energy Work – Embodying Persephone’s Journey
Find a comfortable position.
Close your eyes.
Breathe deeply.
Visualize yourself rising from the earth, like a sprout breaking through the soil.
- Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.
- Feel the joy of the return—the celebration of your emergence.
- Hold both light and dark within you—allowing them to coexist.
What is ready to flourish within you?
What energy is moving through you in this season?
There is no need to force anything.
Just allow, receive, expand.
7. The Wisdom of Persephone – Integration & Action
Take a deep breath.
Place your hands over your heart.
Ask yourself:
- What do I need to rise fully into my next phase?
- What needs to be nurtured within me?
- What support do I need to flourish?
Let the answers come with ease.
Maybe you need:
🌿 Rest
🌿 A shift in perspective
🌿 Community & connection
🌿 Creativity & expression
Whatever it is, honor it.
Spring is a time of emergence, but on your own terms.
You are exactly where you need to be.
Closing Reflection – The Magic of Your Becoming
Take a final deep breath.
Smile softly.
Feel your own radiance expanding.
Persephone reminds us that:
- Darkness is not something to fear, but something to understand.
- Emergence is a celebration, not a forceful act.
- We hold both worlds within us—light and shadow, softness and strength.
What wants to live through you in this moment?
The world needs your magic.
