October marks the beginning of Shadow School at Practice with Clara. It’s a theme we’ve been working with since 2021 and are still inspired by it.
From the google oracle on what is shadow work:
“Shadow work is the process of exploring the hidden or repressed parts of your unconscious mind to understand and integrate them, leading to personal growth, self-awareness, and better self-acceptance. Coined by psychoanalyst Carl Jung, the “shadow self” includes traumas, fears, negative emotions, and even undeveloped potential that we try to disown. By bringing these hidden aspects into conscious awareness through practices like journaling or therapy, individuals can identify and regulate emotional reactions, improve relationships, and heal.”
I’ve always been fascinated with shadow work because it’s a process of uncovering. It involves going below the surface, asking questions and getting quiet to be able to hear the answers. I’ve learned a lot from working with my therapist and meditating on the questions while seated, doing asana, dancing, sweating, drawing or walking.
Before embarking on befriending my shadow selves, I was a tightly wound, anxious and pretty aggressive young person. Now, I’m still all those things AND through accepting them, they no longer drive the bus but instead take their seat among all the others to share their gifts and sit quietly back when they are not needed.
When the shadow parts of ourselves are not integrated into the rest of us, we can be easily triggered, feel as though our emotions are driving our behaviors and feel fractured.
Shadow school is a month long investigation using movement, meditation and journaling prompts inspired by our book of the month, Aghora by Robert Svoboda.
I don’t know what you’re up to for October, but this is your invitation to either join us for shadow school or take the coming season for self led study of yourself…all your selves.
Happy fall friends 😉
