Breath is life moving through us—constant, invisible, and profoundly intelligent.
The power of breath lies in its ability to shape our thoughts, regulate our hormones, and maintain the heart’s steady rhythm.
In every inhale, there is expansion; in every exhale, release. When we bring awareness to the breath, we tap into the most direct pathway between body and mind.
As we honor Vela as our Featured Teacher of the Month on Practice with Clara Virtual Yoga Studio, we invite you to approach her offerings with curiosity and an open mind.
Vela’s approach to breathwork is deeply embodied and trauma-informed. She bridges the science of the nervous system with the mystery of spirit—guiding you to find calm, clarity, and connection from the inside out.
Her classes are invitations to slow down and notice: how you breathe, how you move, how you meet yourself.

The Power of Breath: Your Bridge Between Body and Mind
Take a moment. Close your eyes, feel the ground beneath you, and notice your breath. Without trying to change anything, allow yourself to breathe. This is where everything begins.
Most of us breathe between 20,000 and 30,000 times a day — and yet, we hardly notice it. Breath is more than a biological process; it is the bridge between body and mind. It shapes our physiology, influences our heart rate and hormones, and colors our thoughts, emotions, and patterns of being.
Unlike most systems in the body, breath is both automatic and under our conscious control. That makes it incredibly powerful. With awareness, we can shift our state — from stress to ease, from freeze to flow, from chaos to clarity.
The Power of Breath as a Mirror
How you breathe reflects how you live.
- Shallow breath may mirror a shallow presence.
- Rushed breath can reflect racing thoughts or anxiety.
- Holding your breath might reveal what else you’re holding inside.
When you begin to breathe with awareness, you don’t just change how you feel — you change how you exist. Imagine softening your body in conflict, trusting life when anxious, or energizing yourself when stuck. Breathwork gives access to all of this, not from outside, but from within.
What Is Breathwork?
At its simplest, breathwork is the intentional use of breath to influence your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual state. It has been practiced for thousands of years — from pranayama in yogic traditions to shamanic rituals — and today, modern science is finally catching up to what our ancestors knew.
Some practices are gentle and calming, ideal for reducing anxiety or preparing for rest. Others are activating, leading to heightened states of energy and even altered states of consciousness. Breathwork can be as short as a minute or extend for hours. In every form, the breath gives us access to the nervous system.
The Science and Power of Breath
Your breath directly influences the autonomic nervous system — the balance between stress (sympathetic) and rest (parasympathetic).
- Slow, deep breathing activates the rest, digestion, and repair processes.
- Quick, intense breathing signals focus, energy, and readiness for action.
By consciously adjusting your breath, you gain agency over your internal world. Instead of reacting automatically to stress, you can respond with presence and clarity.
Physiologically, breathwork:
- Reduces cortisol and adrenaline
- Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
- Enhances vagal tone for resilience
- Improves oxygen flow to the brain for clarity and focus
- Supports trauma integration by accessing stored patterns without words
Beyond Biology: Presence and Healing
Breathwork does not promise to erase discomfort — instead, it teaches us how to stay present with it. True freedom is not avoidance; it is learning to ride the waves of thought and emotion without being carried away.
The gift of breathwork is not just about feeling better, but about becoming better at feeling. This practice strengthens nervous system resilience, emotional awareness, and our capacity to meet life with openness.
A Simple Practice for the Power of Breath
Try this short exercise:
- Place one hand on your belly, one on your heart.
- Inhale for a count of four.
- Exhale slowly for a count of six.
- Repeat this process several times, then return to natural breathing.
Notice how you feel — softer, steadier, more connected.
Closing on the Power of Breath
The power of breath is the power of you. Each breath is an invitation to come home to yourself — not to change who you are, but to rediscover the wisdom that has always been within.
When you’re ready, your breath will meet you there.
