The Power of Mantra:

A Guide to the Subtle Body Series

with Clara Roberts Oss

Introduction: The Power of Mantra in the Subtle Body

Welcome to the final session of the Subtle Body Series—Mantra. Of all the elements we’ve covered, mantra holds a special place for me. It is one of the most powerful tools for meditation, along with pranayama and seated meditation. Mantra is, at its core, an instrument for the mind.

The word mantra comes from Sanskrit: manas means mind, and tra means instrument. Thus, mantra is a tool to guide the mind toward clarity and deeper connection. Like tantra, an instrument for expansion, mantra serves as a pathway to accessing higher states of consciousness.

By focusing the mind on sound, we create a bridge between our ever-changing aspects and the unchanging—the eternal presence within us. This session will explore different types of mantras, their effects, and how they integrate into practice.

The Power of Mantra and Chanting

Chanting mantras can be an incredibly transformative experience. It is not about having a beautiful voice but about sound resonance within our bodies. When we chant aloud, we activate the throat chakra responsible for communication and integrity. For many, especially women, using the voice confidently can be a profound self-empowerment practice.

Historically, humans sang together in communities. Today, we often outsource that joy by listening to others sing. Mantra brings us back to the communal act of using our voices, reconnecting us to a deeply ingrained human experience.

Sanskrit and Vibrational Healing

Many traditional yoga mantras are in Sanskrit, which some practitioners may find unfamiliar. However, this unfamiliarity is an advantage—since we have no mental attachment to the meaning of Sanskrit words, we engage more fully with their vibrational quality rather than analyzing their meaning.

This principle is related to nada yoga, the yoga of sound. Research, such as the water molecule experiments by Dr. Masaru Emoto, demonstrates how sound affects physical structures, reinforcing the idea that the vibrations of Sanskrit mantras have a tangible impact on our well-being. Given that our bodies are mostly water, chanting mantras allows us to attune ourselves to harmonious frequencies.

Different Ways to Chant Mantra

There are multiple ways to engage with mantra:

  1. Chanting aloud activates the vocal cords and affects physical and energetic vibrations.
  2. Speaking softly – Murmuring a mantra under the breath creates a subtler internal effect.
  3. Silent repetition – Internalizing the mantra allows for deeper mental focus.
  4. Singing mantra – Engaging in call-and-response or singing in a group enhances collective resonance.

The Sound of OM

One of the most universal mantras is OM (AUM). It represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution:

  • A (ah) – The beginning, creation.
  • U (oo) – The sustaining force.
  • M (mmm) – Dissolution, the return to stillness.

By chanting OM, we attune ourselves to the universe’s fundamental vibration and reconnect with its inherent rhythm.

The Healing Power of Mantra

Different mantras evoke different effects. Some invoke peace, some energize, and others aid in transformation. Examples include:

  • Bija Mantras: Single-syllable seed sounds that align with chakras (e.g., LAM for the root chakra, YAM for the heart).
  • Sanskrit Mantras: Traditional invocations such as Om Namah Shivaya (honoring transformation and change).
  • English Mantras: Simple affirmations that can be repeated, such as “I am whole” or “I am enough.”

A specific healing mantra in Kundalini Yoga is Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung, often used to send healing energy to oneself or others.

The Science of Sound and Connection

Chanting affects us individually and fosters group cohesion. Studies show that when people spend time together, their physiological rhythms synchronize. Singing accelerates this process, creating a unified vibrational field among practitioners.

Reflection and Integration on the Power of Mantra

As you explore the mantra, take a moment to reflect:

  1. How does chanting make you feel, both physically and emotionally?
  2. Which mantras resonate with you the most?
  3. How can you incorporate mantra into your daily practice?

A mantra is a bridge between the tangible and the intangible. It offers a way to connect, release, and embody the essence of yoga beyond the physical postures.

Let’s continue to use the power of mantra through our voices, embrace sound as a tool for transformation, and cultivate connections with ourselves and others.
