Embodying Archetypal Energy With Yoga: Connect to Universal Patterns on the Mat

Archetypes shape our lives in powerful and often unseen ways. They are the universal forces that influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors—manifesting in myths, dreams, and personal experiences. On Practice with Clara Virtual Yoga Studio, we invite you to experience archetypal energy through movement, breath, and awareness through yoga.

Why Combine Archetypal Energy Work with Yoga?

Yoga is more than physical postures—it’s a practice of integration. Just as archetypes live within us, yoga helps us bring them into balance, allowing us to embody their wisdom rather than be unconsciously controlled by them.

In this series, you’ll explore:

  • How archetypes influence your life and decisions.
  • The importance of balancing light and shadow in personal growth.
  • How movement and breath can awaken dormant energies within you.

What’s Included:

  1. Lecture: Understanding Archetypes with Mara Branscombe – Explore how archetypes shape consciousness, balance light and shadow, and how yoga, meditation, and mindfulness help embody their energy.
  2. Lecture: The Power of Archetypes with Shiv Oss – Understand how archetypes shape our lives and how awareness of them can lead to transformation.
  3. Goddess of Impermanence Hatha Yoga – Embrace change and fluidity in your practice.
  4. God of Initiation Hatha Yoga – Tap into the energy of new beginnings and self-discovery.
  5. Mystical Deer Hatha Yoga – Awaken intuition and sensitivity through mindful movement.

By working with archetypes on the mat, you’ll develop a deeper awareness of how these universal patterns move through you, helping you cultivate balance, presence, and transformation.

Join us in this journey of self-exploration through yoga and archetypal wisdom!

Understanding Archetypes Discussion
with Clara Roberts-Oss and Mara Branscombe

Welcome & Introduction

Welcome, friends! Today, we’re diving into the fascinating world of archetypes. I’m excited to share insights from a discussion with Mara Branscombe, a writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist, and spiritual coach. With over two decades of teaching and facilitating, Mara has dedicated her life to amplifying wellness and creativity. When I decided to explore archetypes, I couldn’t think of anyone better to talk to than her.

Mara’s Journey with Archetypes

Mara’s relationship with archetypes began early in life. At just 17, she was initiated into a community called Sisters of the Shields—an experience that introduced her to the teachings of the Mother, Maiden, and Crone archetypes and the Pagan Celtic Wheel of the Year. This early exposure became the foundation for her lifelong commitment to healing arts. Through dance, yoga, meditation, shamanic training, writing, and art, Mara’s work has continuously evolved, reflecting the cyclical nature of personal development.

The Evolution of Archetypal Work

Over the past several years, Mara has dedicated herself to exploring archetypes even further—an exploration that dates back to her youth. What started as an initiation into a mystical community later intertwined with her academic studies in cultural history, women’s studies, and indigenous studies. This unique blend of personal experience and education led her on transformative adventures: a year in India, tree planting off the grid, and living in a cabin without electricity. Each chapter has deepened her understanding of how archetypes mirror our inner journeys.

Understanding Archetypes: Beyond Stereotypes

One key insight Mara shared is that archetypes are not mere stereotypes. Instead, they’re living energies or “codes” within us. Whether it’s the youthful Maiden, the nurturing Mother, or the wise Sage (often also called the Crone), these archetypes represent dynamic aspects of our being. Mara explains that these energies aren’t bound by gender or a strict timeline—they’re like a spiral where you can tap into the Maiden energy one moment and the Sage the next, depending on your inner state and life’s cycles.

The Interplay of Light and Shadow

Our conversation also explored how light and shadow play a role in archetypal energy. Mara described how her work—whether facilitating a class or writing a book—helps her honor both the bright, creative parts of herself and the shadow aspects. For example, while working with the Sage archetype during challenging times like the pandemic, she recognized the need to call out the energy of blame or burnout. Embracing every part of ourselves, including our shadows, can lead to deeper compassion and personal growth.

Archetypes in the Collective Consciousness

Mara believes that archetypal energies are not just personal—they’re collective, too. Reflecting on recent global challenges and movements, she noted that many of us are experiencing a surge of Sage energy: the need to navigate difficulties with wisdom and compassion. Yet, she also pointed out a call for the Huntress or Warrior energy—a readiness to stand up for our beliefs and refine our values in today’s complex world.

Applying Archetypes in Teaching & Daily Life

Regarding her teaching, Mara integrates archetypal work by holding space for every kind of energy in the room. She sets a tone of gratitude, acknowledging that each person’s presence is a gift. By creating a safe environment where both light and shadow are welcomed, she helps participants connect with their inner wisdom. This approach isn’t about rigid formulas; it’s about letting the natural energy of each moment guide the practice.

Getting Started with Archetypal Work

Mara’s advice for anyone curious about this journey is simple: start with what inspires you. Whether you’re drawn to one archetype or want to explore the full spectrum, follow your intuition. Some people may prefer a structured approach, while others might find exploring one archetype at a time more meaningful. The key is to honor what feels right for you at this moment.

Final Thoughts

In our conversation, Mara also touched on the often-overlooked Mother archetype, not just in the literal sense of parenting but as a symbol of nurturing, healing, and reconnecting with our roots. She reminds us that in a world where toxic masculinity and rigid roles have long dominated, reclaiming the Mother energy—both within ourselves and in our connection with Mother Earth—is more important than ever.

As our discussion came to a close, Mara left us with a simple yet profound reminder:
Meditate every day.
Sitting in stillness can help us stay anchored amidst life’s ever-changing energy.

Thank you for joining us on this journey through archetypes. The links in the description provide more information on Mara’s work and her two wonderful books. Enjoy exploring the depths of your own inner world!
