My father and I are in Japan for the week.
On our flight over, we sat next to a Texan gal who lives in Alaska. As my father usually does, he gets to talking with her. We ended up talking for four hours, about everything. Our new friend has started her spiritual quest recently and asked us a lot of questions about meditation and philosophy. One question I enjoyed the most was, what do you think dreams are about? My father got really excited. He responds with – it depends upon who you ask! He continued to share what the Freudians, Jungians and James Hillman would say. I did a bit of research and here’s what I found. Sources are hyperlinked. Sigmund Freud said dreams represent unconscious desires, thoughts, wish fulfillment, and motivations. Carl Jung said dreams are a way for the unconscious mind to communicate with the conscious mind. James Hillman sees “dreams less as a road to the unconscious than as the unconscious itself, ‘the psyche speaking to itself in its own language”.’
What do you think
dreams are about?
To me, they are a mix of our processing the day, our preoccupations and a dialogue we’re having with our sub conscious. And there are some dreams that feel prophetic. A question I’ve asked myself is where do these prophecies come from? Are they from our sub conscious, meaning below the level of the obvious? Are they from the collective unconscious, meaning the energy of the community? Is it divine intervention?
Do you believe in symbology? Do you look out for them in your day? Are you literal or do you seek the nuances?
These are the questions I sat with after our conversation.
I leave them with you.
Lots of questions, few answers.
Peas,
Clara
